Methods and Practices
3 minutes

Everyday life can bring stress and anxiety. Box breathing, also called square breathing, is an easy-to-learn exercise that gives your attention a steady rhythm to follow.

The 4-4-4-4 breathing exercise

Box breathing divides a breathing cycle into four equal phases, like the four sides of a square. It is used by athletes, healthcare professionals and people who meditate as a way to slow down and focus their attention.

The four equal phases of box breathing

How to practise

  1. Inhale: breathe in gently through your nose while counting to four.
  2. Pause: hold your breath comfortably for a count of four.
  3. Exhale: breathe out slowly through your mouth or nose for a count of four.
  4. Pause after exhaling: wait comfortably for a count of four before the next breath.

Repeat a few cycles. If it feels comfortable, practise for around 3–5 minutes. Keep your breathing easy rather than taking the deepest breath possible. Shorten the counts or skip the pauses if you feel strained, and stop if you become dizzy or more anxious.

Possible benefits of box breathing

  1. A calmer moment: a steady, attentive breathing rhythm may help you settle during everyday stress.
  2. Better focus: following the count gives your mind a clear task, which can be useful before work that needs concentration.
  3. Awareness of your breathing: slowing down can help you notice tension and changes in your breathing and heart rate. It does not replace care for a cardiovascular condition.
  4. Mindfulness: attending to the breath can help you become more aware of your body and emotions.

When might you use it?

  • Before an important event or meeting.
  • During a stressful moment at home or work.
  • As a gentle part of meditation or yoga.
  • Before bed, if you find it relaxing.

Tips for a comfortable practice

  • Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted.
  • Sit comfortably with your back supported or gently upright.
  • Close your eyes if you wish, or keep a soft gaze.
  • If four counts feel too long, try two or three. Comfort matters more than reaching a particular count.
  • If you have a condition that affects breathing, ask a qualified healthcare professional before practising breath holds.

Box breathing is a simple tool you can try during everyday stress. Practise gently and notice how you feel. The technique will not suit everyone; a natural, unforced breathing rhythm is always an option.
