Weightless by Marconi Union has become well known as a piece of music for relaxation. Its slow-moving textures and spacious sound offer a gentle backdrop for winding down at the end of the day.

How Weightless was created

Music can influence our mood: it may make us feel energised, joyful, reflective or ready to rest. In 2011, Marconi Union worked with sound therapist Lyz Cooper on Weightless, a project developed for a Radox Spa campaign with relaxation in mind.

A small study by Mindlab compared responses to a selection of tracks and ranked Weightless as the most relaxing among those tested. The track also appeared in TIME's list of the best inventions of 2011. Lyz Cooper describes the collaboration and its background on the Weightless project page.

What makes the music feel calming?

The original track lasts a little over eight minutes. Electronic tones, soft layers and a gradual, unhurried rhythm create a sense of space. Rather than asking for your full attention, the music lets you settle into the sound and take a break from the pace of the day.

Your response will depend on your preferences and the setting. Some listeners find ambient music soothing; others prefer silence or a different style. A favourable result in a small study does not mean the track will have the same effect on everyone, or that it is a treatment for insomnia.

How to listen before bed

Create a comfortable setting: dim the lights if you like, sit or lie down, and play the music at a low, pleasant volume. Headphones are optional. Close your eyes if that feels comfortable and let your breathing stay natural.

You do not need to concentrate on falling asleep. Use the track as a quiet pause in your evening routine, perhaps after gentle stretching or a few minutes of relaxed breathing. If the music does not suit you, try another track or choose silence.

Try Weightless

Listen to Weightless on YouTube or Yandex Music when you would like to unwind. It may become a favourite part of your bedtime routine, but there is no need to expect a particular result.

If difficulty sleeping persists or affects your daily life, seek professional advice rather than relying on music alone. For an overview of the evidence, see the NCCIH guide to sleep and complementary approaches.
